Carbonless paper was developed as a bio-degradable alternative to carbon paper. It is used to make a copy of an original document without intervening layers of carbon paper.

Simply put, carbonless paper consists of sheets of paper which are coated on the bottom and/or the top with micro-sized capsules of dye or ink along with a reactive agent. When pressure is applied to a mated set, either by various printing equipment or by writing, the microcapsules break and the image-forming dyes are transferred to the reactive agent. The chemicals respond to form a black image.
